BigShot

Well this project has been a long time in the making. I first thought about making these about two years ago and it has been a very long road indeed. After a lot of pestering of my machine shop buddy and fiddling around I finally managed to get a proto done last year but it turned out to be a dissapointment. The shape wasn't quite right and the piece was incredibly heavy and a little tippy. I also wasn't happy with the way the knurl was going to be done.

So, back to the drawing board I went. After a good bit of deliberation I decided to go with my whistles as the basis for the design and make it a simple cylinder with beautiful knurling. Well this week I spent several days at the shop watching the machine set up and tweaking the final shape and design. The result is super clean and functional and I'm extremely happy with the proto that was finished yesterday.

BigShots are made of solid 2 inch diameter 303 stainless steel bar stock. Absolutely massive yet we also managed to give them a decent sense of balance in the hand. The capacity of the finished cup is 3 fl oz (85ml) (same size as a brewpub sampler glass) and they weigh in at a hefty 7.5 ozs (213g). LOL, this is a drinking cup that will put muscle in your forearm... just big enough for an ice cube or two and a splash of your favorite libation. Use it as a juice glass, an office paperweight or the manliest bathroom cup ever. :p :D

One thing is for sure, I absolutely guarantee that you will never break it and it will indeed last forever. These babies are truly monolithic!

The only version available for now will be the one pictured below. This knurl looks the best of the three available to me. Up the road who knows but this is what we will do for now.

The BigShots are ready to start in production today or Monday. Not sure yet of their schedule at the shop but it looks like I will have finished pieces by the end of this week coming. I will just have to do a name stamp and run them through the dishwasher and they will be ready to go. The price will be $47 each plus shipping and it will be a general release sale, probably a couple of sales and I will have plenty of extras if people email me.

I can always do a second run later but I'd like to try to get the production number close the first time because these are costing me a small fortune to make. So if those of you who are interested would help me out by signing up below I'd really appreciate it and it will give me some idea of what to shoot for. Thanks. :)

What's Taking So Long?

Hehe, I'm glad you asked! :)

Sorry for the endless delays folks. I've been working my butt off these last few weeks and yet nothing ever seems to get to the completed stage. However, this week coming will see a raging torrent of activity as several projects come to a finish pretty much all at once.

Shiners will be back from heat treat any day now. I thought they might be on Friday's UPS delivery but they weren't. So maybe Monday in which case Tuesday would be the earliest release date since I have to clean them up and package them. But I have no way of knowing the actual day they will be back so that is just a guess.

The 3V MicroSpuds will also be coming back middle or end of this week coming. They looked fantastic after the first tumbling so after heat treat and a finish tumble I think these are going to be absolutely gorgeous. I'm really looking forward to adding one to my own collection. ;)

BigShot stainless steel shot glasses are finally coming up. I have been thinking about this project for two years now. We worked up a prototype last year but I was very dissatisfied with it. The design was too top heavy and unstable and I wouldn't be able to get my favorite knurling on it in a way that was pleasing me. So I went back to basics and totally redesigned the piece. I started pushing a couple of weeks ago to see if we could squeeze a run into the schedule (no small task) and lo and behold it is actually going to happen. I've spent the past several days scuttling back and forth to the shop and having a blast tweaking the design and watching the whole machine setup. I now have the final proto in my hot little hands and the actual run will start today or Monday. Should have some product by the end of the week. Pics of the proto and a sign up post so I can get a rough idea of how many to make will be coming later today.

SuperBugs are all ground and at the tumblers right now for the first stage of tumbling. I'll be getting them back this week for name stamping and then they will go out to the heat treaters. Two weeks or so away on those.

Fixer Knives are rough ground and all I need to do is the finish grinds and clean up the edges. Then they can go out to the first tumbling. So we're getting quite close on them and maybe have them ready by mid April.

Ti Rulers came back from tumble and half of them have burrs on them still. I can't tell you how pissed I am that this stupid little project which was supposed to be a very easy one has turned into a never ending nightmare. The hex openings were all cut undersized so I've had to ream them and then broach them by hand which took forever. Then we had endless problems with the drawing because we couldn't figure out how to get both Imperial and Metric scales on the same drawing. Finally resolved it by doing two drawings and I still have to find out if the laser marking place can deal with it. What a pain in the ass. I'm tempted to trash what I have and just start over but I really wanted to salvage enough to at least pay for the cutting and material. We'll see...

Ti Keyfobs came back from tumble yesterday and they look great. This is a very small batch of only 3 dozen. They will take a little while to decorate and do rivets. Most will probably go via the lottery and will be released in dribs and drabs as I get to it.

Cookie Wrench is coming! Got the second revised drawing finished for this yesterday and they will be cut next week. This is a titanium disc shaped wrench tool based on the old fashioned lantern wrenches. Really neat looking piece, almost like a iron cross or throwing star sort of a thing but no sharp edges of course. Kind of reminds me of the Bermuda Triangles a little bit but an entirely new tool. They will be done in 1/8" titanium for the first run.

The past few days I have been working on stuff like a lunatic. There is a ton of stuff in progress but as usual it's taking forever to get it finished. The Shiner keychain tool is under way and the MicroSpuds are almost ready to send to heat treat. In addition to those I have SuperBugs cut and ready to start grinding later this week. Also have various prototypes that I'm refining and testing so there is much on the horizon even if it seems very slow right now.

Why call it the Shiner? Well, for those of you who are not fishermen, shiners are also known as minnows. They are a favorite bait fish for the fresh water fisherman who prefers to use live bait over artifical lures. I guess I could also call these the SS Minnows. :)

Well, what do you know, I finally managed to get the DLC RingThings done. I'll tell you, sometimes it's hard to crack the whip when you're aiming it at yourself. :)

SuperBug Proto

I'm thinking about revisiting my BugBite design but doing them in steel and adding a bottle opener. I've been toting this proto on my own keychain for a month now and I really like it. I upgraded the O-rings to a beefier size which gives the tool a better feel and the length is slightly longer to fit the bottle opener in there. A nice way to carry a tool bit in an ultra small package. Whaddya think, should I do a run?

What the Heck is a MicroSpud?

Yeah I know, it's the one big question on everyone's minds these days... :p :D To fully understand the thinking behind this piece you'd have to see an original and I'd prefer to show that in a video because it's pretty unbelievable. I'll try to get a clip up soon.

I actually have a batch of these cut and am starting work on them this week coming so they will not be far off.

****Progress Update*****

I am working feverishly on a bunch of other projects right now. Ti Atwrenches are at the tumblers right now and should be back by end of next week if all goes well.

Ti Rulers are still delayed. I had some problems with the cutting and have to broach all the holes by hand. I also still need more CAD work done for the metric scale so don't expect these anytime soon. These were supposed to be a quick and easy project and they have turned into a giant, slow, pain in the butt. Oh well...

Other upcoming projects include the MicroSpud, details of which are coming soon. Also coming is the Shiner, a keychain tool. And I have a small batch of some simple non functional decorative titanium Keyfobs. I also have finally started a small keychain knife called the Fixer which has been planned since last summer and is now in the first stages of work. Huge batch of those are coming. February and March will be very busy!

Getting There Slowly!

Some may recall that I had to buy a new computer last summer thinking that my old one was about to kick the bucket. Well, it kept hanging on so I kept using it and putting off setting up the new one....until this past weekend when the old one just refused to boot up. So I spent the last three days getting used to the new machine and rebuilding my business files and everything else. Luckily I had backed up most of my important files so very little was lost. What a pain but at least I'm through the worst of it and almost all back to normal. Taking a bit to get used to a new keyboard, Vista, etc.

Will be getting back to work in the shop tomorrow. Lot of new stuff is in the early stages right now. More news coming soon.

Ti RingTools!

I have completed the first wave of Ti RingTools. These are all stonewash finished and anodized. I will be offering three colors: Green, Blue and UV.

The official ring size of these is size 12 so they will fit most average sized fingers. They will be a little too small for really big guys but I will probably do a larger sized piece in a future run so if you were a football player in a past life don't worry! Folks with smaller hands like me can wrap a little thread or tape around the bottom to take up the slack. Or wear it on your thumb. ;)

Each comes with extra o-rings and a #1 Phillips bit insert. Price will be $35 plus shipping.

Howdy folks! Just got the sheath done for this one and I thought it would be a nice way to kick off 2009. This is a one of kind, hand made neck knife with V ground blade. It is 5/32" thick S30v steel with approximately 2 inch cutting edge and about 5 inches OAL. It has DLC coating with high contrast jungle patterning. I decided to call it the Bird of Paradise which kind of suits it. It comes with a kydex sheath with bead chain and also a mini teklok belt clip. Howdy folks. Hope everyone had an enjoyable, stress free and safe holiday season!

I'm still taking it easy and catching up on paperwork and some odds and ends. Things will be very slow for the next week or two while I take care of some stuff and order new sheets of steel, etc. It takes awhile to gear back up after a big push like I made before the Christmas week.

RingTools will not be ready for a little while yet. I got them last week from tumbling but they need more grinding and a retumble before I can do the final anodizing, etc. So figure two weeks for them. There is only one hole size for now and it is .838" or 21.2mm. This size will fit medium and average size fingers but probably not the giant mitts of 250 lb guys. I'll be making a second slightly larger size later on this winter. I'm not going to get into a whole bunch of sizes on these because it's a nightmare. They are what they are. The first batch is made of hefty 3/16" thick titanium stock and although I have not yet figured out the final cost I think the price will be reasonable.

Ti Rulers are also on deck with the RingTools but I still have a bunch of work to do on them. Hopefully I will get to the ti stuff later this week and get it moving along in the process again.

I will be having more lotteries in mid January. I have some more knives to finish and right after I do the prep work on the ti stuff I will get back into sheath mode.

Basic Mini Keytons

I'm telling you, Santa's elves have been working overtime here at the Atwood workshop. :) I have finally gotten a chance to finish a big batch of Mini Keytons. These are the Basic ones in S30v steel. None were cut in titanium this time around and with all the new stuff I have planned I seriously doubt if I will be making any more Keytons in this size in any material. So this is probably the end of them.

G4 Metric Prybabies®

Alright, this is the Metric version of the G4 Prybaby® tool. Same exact features as the American version below but featuring 6 decimal sizes in 2mm increments, 6-16mm. The tool features the distinctive "M" as part of the lanyard hole to easily distinguish it from its American cousin.

It has been brought to my attention that only three of the wrench sizes correspond to common Metric wrench sizes. So in future editions I will redesign the opening to exclude the off sizes even though it messes up the tidy 2mm increment steps. I think it's still a nifty tool nevertheless and I hope quite useful despite my small screw up.

G4 Prybabies

Hi Folks,

Well at long last I have some of the new S30v steel G4 Prybabies finished. These are identical to the G3 series but have the addition of a screwdriver tip on the rear end of the tool. They are 3 1/2" overall length. At first I thought they might seem a bit too long but they actually are a very nice size in the hand so I'm pleased. I'm also very pleased with the finish on these. Hard to photograph, but they have a smooth, almost buttery, semi satin stonewashed finish on them.

I'm starting off with the American version because I'd like to drain a little of the demand off before I release the metric pieces. I made the metric ones especially for my international customers and I want the overseas folks to get first shot at them although I know a number of my regulars here in the states also want one for their own collections. So I'll probably do the metrics tomorrow.

Things are looking good for some big tool batches late this week! I got word they are through heat treat and getting a fine semi polish tumble right now. It has taken many weeks and I went through a lot of extra steps it seems like with these batches but they are finally almost ready. :)

G4 is what I decided to call the new longer Prybabies to make a distinction from the shorter, round butt G3 model. I will have both American and metric version available and I hope will be finishing them up and packaging later this week. There could be another lottery or two in addition, we'll see how it goes.

DLC Bug Out Blade Lottery

Finally got the sheaths done for these. These are my old school Bug Out Blades, made of CPM 3V at 5/32 thick, tumbled to a bright stonewashed finish and then coated with DLC. OD green cord wrap completes the package. Five inch OAL, blade length 1.75". They come with the usual kydex sheath and removable mini teklok belt clip. Update: New Projects

Hi Folks,

Well, the lotteries have been very successful and I just want to thank everyone for signing up. I deeply appreciate the interest in my little tools and knives and I want to wish everyone the very best this holiday season! :)

I have a lot of stuff coming up even though it seems like it is taking forever. The long awaited extended G3 Prybabies are getting a pretumble right now. They should be back to me any day now...as soon as I get them I will be doing my name stamp and then sending them back to heat treat and then on to a final bright polish tumble. My aim here is to raise the bar on my finish and I think these may very well be the best that I have been able to achieve so far. I think the small delays in working out the new schedule will be well worth it. I'm not sure they will be completed before the heat treater breaks for the Christmas holiday though. If that is the case then these will not be done until the second week in January. I'll be pestering them though to get them to me before Christmas so keep your fingers crossed.

At the same time as the G3s there is a large batch of Mini Keytons that will be getting the same treatment.

In other news, I have long had an interest in antique tools as many of you know. My collection has grown over the years and I have a very wide range of hand tools. Everything from old pliers to wrenches to screwdrivers to pocket tools of all sorts. I'm always researching and evaluating that which came before my own little creations. One of my favorites has always been little rulers and I have about 40 of various sizes including the cool old boxwood and brass folding rulers as well as metal machinist rulers of all sorts.

So I got to thinking...how about a small pocket Atwood ruler? Even more interesting, how about an Atwood ruler tool? The first hurdle was to find a reliable laser engraver. My previous attempts to hook up with local companies was a disaster. They wouldn't return my calls, had unreasonable charges, etc. One place actually had a sample with promises to return it and never got to the project despite a dozen phone call reminders. I finally gave up in disgust. I recently attended a small trade show however and found a terrific place in eastern MA that will do the job for a reasonable price and turnaround time.

Anyway, this was just a first pass sample. The final tool will have the American scale across the top and metric scale on the bottom:

Hehe, I've seen a lot of rulers but never one in ti. Lots of fun! If this works out as I hope it will open up a whole new palette of possibilities and I already have several drawings for future tool ideas.

Many of you might have seen pictures on the forums of a small Ringtool with captive bit. I had a couple of prototypes cut in steel to test the design. Recently I did some tweaks to the drawings and came up with something slightly more robust. Made of much thicker 3/16" stock, these are not only look much better but have a bit more weight to them as well. Well, the steel ones did anyway...but everything is better in titanium isn't it? :D



There's more too but that's it for now. I'm not sure if any of the above projects will be completed in time for Christmas but if not then January is going to be rather busy. In the meantime stay warm!

Fancy Ti Gasbabies

OK, I had a few of these flat titanium Gasbabies left from a big batch and I thought I'd play a little with my new Helter Skelter patterning. As a couple of people have said, it has a quality that reminds you of the patterns of light that you see at the bottom of a swimming pool on a sunny day. The Spectrum anodizing really works well with it too. Neat little wallet pieces and at just .060 thick they seem almost weightless.

Happy Post Turkey Day! Hope everyone had a good day and are on the road to gastric recovery. :)

I finished a batch of the G3 Prybabies this morning. The green G2s were so popular that I thought I'd do some of the G3s in green as well. The G3s are not a limited edition although I do not have a whole lot of them this time around. Another batch will probably happen at some point in the winter. At any rate, these are running $70 each plus shipping.

Limited Edition: G2 Tibabies

I have some stonewashed G2 Titanium Prybabies that I have anodized a nice green. This is a Limited Edition of 42 pieces and I won't be making them again. These were cut from some thick .160 (5/32) ti sheet which is getting very hard to find these days...they are substantial little tools. Same exact size as a standard Atwood Gasbaby but without the wrench cutouts. Price on them will be $70 plus shipping.

DLC MSOPThing Lottery

Hi folks, got another batch of the DLC Mini Son of PryThings ready to go finally. These are mostly matte finish but there are a couple of satin DLC pieces also. The cord is the very nice quality OD green with glow flecks. They come with kydex sheath and bead chain. Price on them is $180 plus $8 domestic shipping, $26 for international express mail shipping. In Grinding Mode

Just wanted to pass along an update. I'll be done with grinding and cleanup of all the extended G3 Prybabies this morning including both the metric and American versions. Unfortunately the heat treater is closed all week next week so it will take some time to get these through the last steps. However, I have some other stuff to grind as well and so I'll have a really big batch of stuff to send to them by the end of next week. Will be lots of little things for December...

I'll get back to the sheaths in a few days as well, just as soon as this grinding session is out of the way. Also, the DLC stuff should be back by next week at the latest so there will be a bunch more of those pieces coming as well as the titanium Prybabies which should be back from tumbling any day now. So stay tuned for a mix of general releases and lotteries coming up in a few days.

DLC Whistle Lottery

So, moving right along. ;) How about this DLC coated, high voltage patterned, one of a kind stainless steel whistle? This piece is quite unique and is one of the very few Atwood whistles with no knurling that have ever been made. There is no name stamp. Pretty neat stuff and it took that patterning rather nicely, shows up better in person than my picture conveys.

Anyway, for those not following sports, the New England Patriots will be playing the NY Jets tonight. The drawing will be at halftime, whenever that is. Hey it's a football game! :D Price on the piece is $70 shipped in US, add $5 for international.

Metric Prybaby Sneak Peek

Here's a little sneak peek at the upcoming metric G3 Prybaby®. I have two versions, one SAE and one metric. The SAE version has the usual round lanyard hole and the metric has a distinctive "M" shaped lanyard hole for quick and definitive identification. :)

I just started grinding these yesterday so it will be at least two weeks or so before they are completed. But the good news is they are finally in the works....total length on these is 3.5" so they are a bit longer than a regular Prybaby®. I may also do a shorter metric version up the road without screwdriver end. Metric sizes 6,8,10,12,14,16mm. SAE sizes 1/4, 5/16, 3/8, 7/16, 1/2, 9/16.

I have just three of these Micro Bug Out Blades with DLC coating and OD green cord wrap. These are the very last of the Micro Bug Out Blades and as of now I have no plans to make more. They are made of the great Crucible tool steel CPM 3V so they are incredibly tough and hold a terrific edge. Each will come with kydex sheath and removable teklok belt clip. Hey Everyone! I'm back after a few days of shop maintenance, yard work and trade show attendance. I'm back in sheath making mode and finally have some more Mini Son of PryThings to offer.
