M is for.....Metric!

Hi Folks,

Thanks for patiently waiting for new releases these past couple of weeks. I've been working steadily on numerous projects and have made a huge amount of progress. It's looking like September will be the busiest month of the year so far with a couple of brand new offerings and also some older ideas brought back to life. Exciting stuff is on the horizon once again!

I had mentioned today's tool on the Facebook group last week but didn't have a finished one on hand to post a picture. At any rate, I'm very pleased to bring this one back from the dead. Several years ago I made a series of tools called the Atwrench which many of you probably remember. I did a bunch of SAE version tools in steel and also made a few titanium pieces. Then I decided to do a metric offering and I made just one small batch of them in S30v steel. Needless to say, those metric pieces have been in high demand over the years and I have received MANY requests for another run of them or to make a brand new metric tool.

Well, for the past several years I have had an old titanium Atwrench sitting on my kitchen counter and it is a constant reminder to me of how handy this tool is. I have used it to pop more than a few beers of course but it has also been useful as a pry tool on numerous occasions. At 3.25 inches long (82mm), the size is perfect and the ergonomics are very satisfying indeed.

So earlier this summer I was going through some older drawings and I came across the Atwrench and Metwrench designs and it was yet another reminder to me. The time is definitely ripe for a revival of these great tools.

For this version I have left the original odd number Metric size wrench set in place. Wrench sizes are 5, 7, 9, 11, 13 and 15mm. Up the road I may do a variation and try to include the most ideal frequently used sizes only but I'm not there quite yet. For now, the original wrench set will have to suffice.

Anyway, I played around for days with various configurations and ended up with a rather nice design update. This new tool features more aggressive, deep cut crenallations on the edges for a secure grip. The cap lifter is perfectly sized for smooth single pop action and I moved the distinctive "M" to the small end of the wrench set so it is less obtrusive and much stronger. Careful chamferring on all corners and edges ensure the most comfortable grip possible and indeed, this tool will melt into your hand. They are made of .160 S30v steel so have plenty of heft to them and they have been thoroughly tumbled to a nice stonewashed finish. All in all, a very satisfying tool and one that you will really enjoy carrying.

This is the first wave of the double sized batch. The other half of the batch is at heat treat right now and will be back in about two weeks. In addition, a double sized batch of SAE Atwrenches with the exact same footprint have already been cut and are getting surface ground next week. So the first of those will be coming in about 4-5 weeks. Lots of Atwrenches on the horizon!

Anodized Ti DreadKnots

Hi Everyone,

Raining like heck here today and quite humid. We'll survive I'm sure, but it makes for a gloomy summer day.

Speaking of gloomy, the light is lousy so I apologize in advance for the crummy pics below. Couldn't find good light today to get the colors looking right...anyhow, today I have the first wave of titanium DreadKnots done. These came out very nice. I have anodized them in various color combinations, mostly rainbows and color fades although there are a few solid colors in the mix as well. Basically though they are mostly all different and unique so I will send you whatever I send you, no color choices this time around.

I've been working on a second batch of ti DreadKnots to be finished shortly and those will probably be a plain stonewashed batch, we'll see what I feel like doing and what I have time to get done.

Stainless BedBugs

Hi Folks,

We're heading into another hot and sticky summer week here in the northeast. So I figured I better get another sale in today since I'll probably not be very productive for the next few days.

Today I finally have the small batch of stonewashed 316 stainless steel BedBugs done. These have been sitting around for several months and I just haven't had a chance to get them finished up and packaged until now. Anyway, the BedBug series are nifty little bit caddy tools and they make nice keyfobs or zipper pulls for your gear bags. It's a tiny batch so one per customer please...have a wonderful rest of the weekend and stay cool this week!

Time to Tie One On!

I hope everyone is having a terrific Independence Day holiday weekend. It's in the 90's F. here with high humidity so definitely the dog days of summer...

As mentioned previously, I've been very busy lately with new drawings and getting new projects underway. Today I have the first wave of one of those projects ready to go...

I designed this new tool with two groups in mind: the paracord/knot tying crowd and traditional sailors. The DreadKnot is an ultra compact 3 inch pocket tool that features a universal shackle key for loosening those thumb screws found on the U shaped shackles on sailboats. lt works very well for working standard wing nuts too. Also featured is a small marlin spike which I have intentionally left just a little bit blunt but still quite pointy. Fantastic for loosening tight knots in either paracord or ropes! And of course it has a cap lifter and a 1/4" hex opening.

Because I envisioned this tool going to sea, corrosion resistance is an important consideration in the choice of materials. I chose 5/32" thick 316 stainless steel for the first batch as it is excellent in salt water environments. The second batch will be coming in a week or two and they will be in titanium.

The DreadKnots will run $55 plus shipping and it will be one per customer on them for this small first wave. I will be making a bunch of these as time goes on so expect a few releases and possibly a 4 inch version as well up the road.

Short Wave: G2 Ghosts

Hi Everyone,

It's a hot and lazy weekend here. Actually not too hot but quite humid so it feels hotter than it is. Although I could waste the whole weekend lying around and watching the Red Sox while drinking a cold beer, I thought instead maybe I should be productive, sneak a little sale in and then catch the last few innings.

Today I have another small batch of G2 Ghosts ready to go. These are S30v with a stonewashed finish. There are still tons more of these to go as soon as I can get the time and energy to grind them and get them out to heat treat. Then there will be several huge waves of 3v Ghosts after those. Lots of grinding ahead for me in July.

Rest of the S30v Cryptos

Hi Folks,

It's a hot and muggy week here in western MA with temps around 90F. It's a good week to hunker down in the relatively cool basement and get a few things done. 

So today I have the first wave of S30v steel Cryptos done. These are .160 thick so they are nice and chunky. SAE wrenches sized 1/4-9/16 with Prybaby(R) front end.... Due to the compact yet beefy size of this tool, they have a pleasing weight to them, around 1.5 ounces. On this batch of tools I decided to reverse direction and put the grinds on the opposite side rather than the way I did the titanium version. These have had the V notch milled into them as well as the extra grinds and they are hardened to 57-59 Rockwell with cryo treatment. The finish is a fine stonewash with a slightly subdued shine.

It's been a little quiet around here lately but that's about to change. Things are shaping up nicely, lots of goodies are on the horizon, and indeed it's looking like a very busy summer lies ahead.  It's been good to have some long stretches of recent shop time and much preparation has been getting done.

Today I have some more of the stonewashed G2 Ghosts finished. These are the same as the first batch, all S30v steel, .160 thick with regular grinds. There are a lot more of these on my bench now, still in the process of being ground and sent to heat treat so this is simply the next of several forthcoming waves. They Call It Stormy Monday...

..but Tuesday's supposed to be just as bad. Yo Mother Nature, what's up with all this rain lately? :)

Hi Folks!  I've been busy grinding and tumbling all this past week. I just sent out a big batch of S30v G2 Ghosts to heat treat and so those should be back in about two weeks. I also sent out a batch of beefy S30v Cryptos to heat treat. Next week another batch of both tools will go out as well so there are TONS of tools coming just as I promised. It's taking a little while to get them going which, as anyone knows who has been following the Atwood Circus for any length of time, is pretty much always how it is.

Anyhow, fun times at Atwood Knife and Tool. I have had several weeks of very productive drawing time in between all the grinding and there will be some promising new designs coming as the summer goes on. It's a funny thing about drawings...months can go by and I start to think I will never have another cool idea and then all of a sudden a bunch of interesting stuff will come to me. Some ideas are viable and have "legs" and others sit there and fester for a while before ultimately being discarded or put on the back burner. I think a couple of the recent ones are a definite go though, so as soon as I figure out the details and settle on materials, etc. I will be letting you know.

Flash Sale: Raw Bar G2 Ghosts

Hi Folks,

Spring is coming to the northeast in fits and starts this year...it's been darned chilly here lately but at least everything is green since the recent rains and I've mowed my lawn twice already. In a normal year though we would have mowed probably a half dozen times so that tells you how cool and dry it's been.

Well, I have been puttering around the shop a bit and slowly getting some stuff going. The big batches of G2 Ghosts were cut this week so I will start working on them soon, prepping them for surface grinding and then doing the grinds and finishing for heat treat. I will be working on a large batch of S30v steel Cryptos in the next week or so as well and also making some time to finish more of the earlier ti Crypto batch. A couple of other odds and ends may make their way into Flash Sales too.

I have had an explosion of interesting ideas recently so have been frantically working on new drawings. I will make some decisions soon on which ones are worth pursuing. I think you will love the direction that they are going and I can tell you that I am VERY excited about a couple of them in particular. Did I mention I was excited? Hehe...

Also, the Super Secret Mystery Project is coming closer to fruition... It's going to be an amazing summer! ;)

The Ti Wroaches are made of 5/32 stock and are 3.5 inches long with a simple stonewashed finish. They feature a pry tip with wire stripper notch, Acetylene B-tank wrench, 5/16 and 1/4" hex openings, O2 wrench, cap lifter and rear screwdriver/pry tip. No O-rings with these, just plain.

G2 Ghosts

Hi Everyone,

Yes, it's true, the long awaited G2 Ghosts have arrived!

This is just the first of many waves that are coming over the next two months or so.The steel is S30v and they average about .166" thick so are quite robust and the weight feels nice in the hand.

For the redesign I decided to update the cap lifter to a round hook shape and it is an effective single stroke popper. The round hole of the original has been replaced with a 5/16" hex opening but the 1/4" hex opening and O2 wrench are the same as the original design. The footprint is identical to the original size as well. The hex shaped side cutouts have been replaced with a unique sine wave style of jimping which provides a nice grippy texture and is something new in the world of jimping...or at least I've never seen jimping exactly like this before at any rate. ;)

These Ghosts have a bright stonewashed finish and they come with a #1 NiteIze s-clip. There are no stamped Ghosts or extra grinds on any of this batch, they are all just regular. We'll see what happens on future batches but there isn't a lot of appropriate real estate on them so probably stamps are out for this design.

Flash Sale: Flat S30v Raw Bar Bedbugs

Dear Friends,

As you all know, recently my fans have been snapping up my batches of tools in record time. Of course, I am deeply flattered to have that kind of demand for my products and I am immensely grateful for the business! However, I hear from folks constantly who are frustrated that they have tried for ages and just cannot get a break and catch a sale in time. So, to address this concern, for smaller batches or for special batches of limited items I sometimes do a Sign Up Sale.

Well, the SUSale system certainly makes things more fair but it is often a bit tedious for me on my end. It takes a lot of time to go through the entries, discard duplicates, pick the random numbers and send out the emails. It's more work than you might think and it takes quite a bit of time. It would be nice if there was a way to simplify the process and speed it up. So I asked Jenny for assistance. She was incredibly kind to help me work out a new type of sales model and she wrote some new software to do it. (Thank you Jenny!) The result is a sort of hybrid of the SUSale and a General Release sale but with a restricted time element added. With this new sale tool I can now be both fair but also more efficient at the same time. We're calling it a Flash Sale. I think this is a cool idea and it will be rather fun as well. Now, I will continue to do both General Release Sales and SUSales, but this new idea offers us an interesting third option, especially for small batches.     

How the Flash Sale model works:

1. Similarly to a Sign Up Sale, you fill out a form with your real name, real shipping address and a valid email address. It is very important that you make sure your email is spelled correctly or you will forfeit your turn! Likewise, your address must be the shipping address the item will go to. Unlike the SUSale system however, no list of entries or list of winning numbers will be shown. Remember, I'm trying to keep all this as simple as possible on my end and not so cumbersome to manage.

2. The sale will be for small batches of items, no specific quantity, it's for however many pieces I have on hand. The duration of the Flash Sale Entry Period will be however long I decide but generally these are SHORT sales for small quantities so anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes might be a typical duration of a Flash Sale Entry Period.

3. After the specified Entry Period is up I will select the winning buyer numbers via a random number generator.

4. Emails will then be sent to the buyers containing the purchase link.

5. As soon as all the email notifications have gone out I will announce on the blog that the Response Period has begun. You will then have only a short time to respond to the email and purchase the item. That time will be announced at the same time that I set up the sale. So for example, for a 30 minute sale I might give just 15 minutes to respond to my email containing the purchase link. For a 15 minute sale I might give only 10 minutes to respond. It will depend on how many items I have to offer and how long I want to run the response time.

5. If I haven't heard back from you within the given time frame (no exceptions!) then you forfeit your turn and I will select a second round of buyers from an alternate list of randomly selected numbers. The process will then repeat until all the items are sold.

This is as fair as I can make it. Everyone has the same chance. People who have software advantages or Facebook alerts and who get to the sales in the first two minutes EVERY SINGLE TIME are put on the same level playing field as everyone else. I will have more control over the sales of small batches and will eliminate the overselling and subsequent refund problem. The problem of the disappearing SUSale winners who don't get back to me for 2 days because they signed up and then went out drinking with their buddies or are scrambling around to raise the funds for the purchase is now over. There will no longer be leftovers after the sales so all batches can be more efficiently sold out and I will save many hours of answering emails after the sales. This will be a fun approach and above all, as I mentioned, it's as FAIR as fair can be for my fans! It's also fair to me and to my valuable time.

So there you have it. How about a test run? :D I'll give a little longer than 30 minutes on this first trial sale so that everyone gets a chance to read through the rules above a couple of times.

Rest of the 3v Ghosts

Hi Folks,

It appears that Spring is finally here in the Northeast with temps today in the 60's, after what seemed like an endless winter. Even yesterday I was seeing my breath when I stepped outside around noon time. It's been brutal.

Well I've been puttering around the shop this week trying to get some things finished. These CPM 3v Ghosts are a good example of several batches of tools that I need to get through and more tools will be coming in the next few days. Clearing some shelf space will be good as I have tons and tons of Gen 2 Ghosts on the way...

At any rate, these 3v Ghosts were ones that I had culled from the first round because they had finishes that were uneven or other little flaws. I spent all day yesterday bead blasting them and then running them through several different tumbling steps to get them to a beautiful shiny finish. This is it for the Generation One CPM 3V Ghosts but there are too mega sized batches of the new Gen 2 design that will be coming in late May and June so lots more on the way. 

The Ghosts are $55 as before, plus shipping, and it's ONE PER CUSTOMER again. I hope to have enough of the Gen 2 version to relax the one per customer restriction but on these I only have a few dozen left so please bear with me. Anyway, as usual, the link is below. Well, this sure has been a crazy and sad time for folks in MA and in the USA in general. Here's hoping that life will calm down and return to normal now. We could all use a break from the stress of it all.

The first wave of S30v G2 Ghosts have gone to heat treat so if all goes well and in a timely fashion they should be back in approximately 2-3 weeks. There are many more coming as the steel has already been ordered. The idea is there will be enough G2 Ghosts for pretty much everyone who wants one. At least I hope so at any rate. ;)

Anyway, today I have a small batch of titanium Count Sporkulas ready to go. These have a stonewashed finish and are anodized a light UV purple. These are the only ones available right now and I'm not sure when I will have more but there are some stainless steel ones that I hope to get done at some point soon as well.

Hi Folks,

Spring is finally finding it's way to the Northeast. Today was the first day that didn't feel like a walk in freezer when you stepped outdoors and it's supposed to be getting steadily nicer as the days and weeks progress. I'm lookng forward to it!

OK, so, tonight I have some of those long awaited CPM 3v Steel Ghosts done. These are identical in design to the previous batches from several years ago. However, someone asked how they would be able to tell them apart from the older ones. The answer is, "easily"! I've been interested in some of the distressed finishes that have become popular with many makers in recent years so I decided to develop my own take on the heavy patina look.

These Ghosts feature a hand rubbed and oiled antique finish that is very attractive and I think it will prove to be extremely durable. If you showed these tools to a casual stranger who was unfamiliar with my work you would probably have little trouble convincing them that this was an heirloom tool transported straight from your great grandfather's workbench from 1935. And given the tremendous strength of CPM 3V powder based tool steel, your future great grandchildren will be enjoying these tools years from now. Of course, a little oil applied periodically will help that dream become a reality...3v is a pure tool steel so is more susceptible to rusting but IMO a dash of oxidation will further add to the patina and the charm.

Features include pry tip/screwdriver, cap lifter and 5/16 wrench, 1/4 hex opening, oxygen wrench for first responders and medical. They measure 2.5 x 1" and the thickness is just under 5/32.

The 3V Ghosts will ship with a nice little NiteIze clip and they will run $55 plus shipping. Let's keep it one per customer please as the batch is not huge. I will have a few more in the days ahead although they will be getting progressively shinier as the remaining pieces get retumbled and further refinished. These were just the ones I was able to get ready for today. In addition, there is an enormous batch of Generation 2 Ghosts already underway with some slight design changes so those will be coming in late May and June in both steel and titanium.

General Sales vs SUSales

I have newbies emailing me every week asking me the same question and I guess my FAQ isn't clear enough. So I will post the answer here that I just wrote in response to an inquiry.

I have two kind of sales:

1. General Sales: In which I post a clickable link above the picture of the item being offered. Lately these have been over in about 5-10 minutes. After the sale is over and the item is sold out I remove that clickable link. This is why you don't see any links there now.

2.  Sign Up Sales: These are special sales for items where I only have a handful available, usually for unique items such as patterned pieces, special grinds, unusual one off type of things and edged tools. In this type of sale I post a link to a Sign Up Page and on this page you would enter your name and email. Later in the day I draw winning numbers and send the winners a link to purchase the item being offered. I rarely do SUSales but once in a while I put one up. You have to sign up for each and every Sign Up Sale individually at the time that I post the sale. In other words, you can't sign up and be permanently signed for every SUSale down the road. This is because you may not be interested in the next item that I post and I only want people signed up for those items they are interested in.

Howdy Folks!

Well, I've been hitting the grinder pretty hard lately and have been getting a ton of stuff done. While we're waiting for steel tools to get through heat treat I have another little project that has finally come to fruition...Introducing the first of the Mystery Tool series:

So here's what happened...One night I left the LockNut Monster and a Prybaby® on the bench together next to a case of beers, unchaperoned, and this is the predictable result. That's their story and they're sticking to it! :D

The Cryptos are an interesting hybrid concept. At first glance it might appear that these are left handed grinds since they face the opposite of my usual Prybaby® configuration. But after playing with the design a bit I decided to switch things up this time and make the "Prybaby®" end the tail of the creature, thereby emphasizing the jaws. The truth is, this is such an ambidexterous tool that the pry tip orientation really doesn't matter much so I think everyone will be happy with this run regardless of hand dominance. Also, I am making a second batch in S30v steel and I may grind those the other way for variety, we'll see what happens once they are underway.

Anyway, the Cryptos are made of titanium and are slightly lighter than usual at .125 thick, still very substantial feeling in the hand however. The features include a prytip/screwdriver (no V Notch on this batch), cap lifter, 5/16 wrench, large 1/2" hex opening, 1/4" hex opening and offset open jaws with the usual SAE sizes 1/4"-9/16".  The first wave of these are stonewashed only, no anodizing, but I have several more waves of them in process and will do some colors on the next ones.

The fiddle factor with this tool is off the charts and I have been addictively spinning them between my fingers every time I pick them up. Too much fun! :)

Weevils with Extra Grind

Hi Everyone,

Hope everyone is having a pleasant week so far. It's cold and rainy here today and there's still a lot of snow on the ground but there are promising signs ahead... we are turning the corner on winter and spring is definitely on the way very soon.

I've been busy in the shop working on tools. Those 3v Ghosts are heading out to heat treat this week so are about two weeks or so away from completion. Also, I've been running the tumblers 24/7 and trying to get some odds and ends finished from older batches so there may be a little more activity here than there has been lately. In addition, the secret ti Mystery Tools are in process and those should be ready to go in a few days. The second half of the month is going to be getting extremely busy compared to the first half!

Today I have the rest of the S30v Weevils finally finished. I decided to regrind and retumble these and I gave them each an extra grind above the "eye". They came out really nice I think.... The batch is not very large so I will keep it at one per customer on the Weevils and they will run the same as the regular ones, $60 plus shipping. S30v Weevils with Vintage Finish

Good Morning Everyone!

Goodbye gloomy February. It has been a nasty month here in New England: gray, dreary and depressing. Luckily March is just about here and I'm looking forward to more moderate temperatures along with some melting of the snow and ice. Some brighter skies wouldn't hurt either.

So, update time....I still haven't gotten around to grinding those 3v Ghosts but I'm hoping to set aside a little time in the next week and get those going. That means we're probably 3 weeks or so away on them at this point. No worries though, there's plenty of interesting stuff coming up in the meantime so I think everyone will be quite entertained.

Today I have more of the Weevils done. This batch came back from heat treat with a very dark finish to the steel. I think they must have run them through a different tempering oven than the last ones or something. Or perhaps they were monkeying around with the temperatures in order to bring the Rockwell within specs. At any rate, I could have tumbled the heck out of them to try to achieve a brighter finish but I kind of like the more rustic style patina these have. I'd call it a Vintage finish.

This is a relatively small wavelet so I'll make it one per customer on this sale and hopefully a bunch more folks will get a shot at them this time. Invasion of the Weevils!

Hi Folks,

It's still cold and miserable here in New England but the sun is gaining strength every day and I'm pretty sure Spring is right around the corner...

I've been slogging away on several projects and progress is being made. The 3V steel Ghosts are about to get surface ground after which I will grind the bevels and finish the cleanup steps in preparation for heat treat. So expect those in about 3-4 weeks. In the meantime there is a bunch of cool stuff to get through starting with:

Todays' offering is the first wave of the Weevils. This little guy is actually Superbug III but with some tweaks. After much study and comparison I decided that the direction that the Superbug II had taken was not really what I was going for in the original idea. Although I did like that design, the more compact form factor of the Original Superbug was more pleasing to me and so I decided to make that my starting point and go from there. So I changed the bottle opener to a more efficient hook design, tweaked the o-ring grooves and gave him an "evil" eye. 

The Weevils are S30v steel, 2.7 inches long, .7 inches wide and about .175 thick...a small but very hefty little package. They come with the usual #1 Philips bit, extra o-rings and #.5 NiteIze S-biner clip.

The Weevils run $60 plus shipping. The batch is fairly large and there will be more waves of these coming in the next week so I'll give this one a limit of two per customer. As always, thank you so much for your patience and hope everyone is having a great week!

Hope everyone is having a nice week out there. It's still quite chilly here, in the 20's today, so I'm hunkered down and getting some work done.

Update: I'm working through some steel tools right now, revisiting an older design and making some tweaks...The first batch of Superbug III, the Weevil, is at heat treat right now so will be back in about two weeks. Second batch of Weevils is in the tumbler today and will be heading out for heat treat later this week. Also coming will be a batch of 3V Ghosts and those are getting cut this week if all goes well so look for those in early March probably. And the SSMT, Super Secret Mystery Tool, is scheduled for cutting in the next week or two...those are also going to be in steel, and maybe followed by a wave of them in ti.  And lastly the unmentionable ISMT, or Incredibly Secret Mystery Tool, is still on schedule for early Spring. :p :D

So today I have the rest of the brass BedBugs with antique diemaker stamps finished. As before, these are one per customer and there aren't very many of them so this may be over rather quickly. Brass Bedbugs

Hi Folks,

Sorry for the long radio silence, I've been extremely busy getting various projects underway. There's been a ton of new things to work through for 2013 but I am slowly getting it together. I have a number of interesting projects going and I think everyone will be quite pleased as the winter goes on and new items are revealed.

Alas, I have some bad news for international customers...the US Post Office just raised their rates and it's not pretty. Priority International is now $24, Priority to Canada is now $20 and Express Mail has gone up to $38. Sorry guys, obviously this is out of my control. My understanding is there are some services that remail at a discount from the US so if you purchase a lot of items from the States then perhaps that is worth looking into but I don't know how they work or if they are reliable. I do know that several of my international customers have been doing that for a while with apparent success so maybe they will chime in on the comments.

So for today I have some brass Bedbugs finished. These are all stamped with my antique diemaker stamps. There are lots of the usual skulls, bugs, leaves, anchors, boats, owl heads, sword hilt, etc but because brass is a soft metal I was able to try out some new stamps that I have not dared try on harder materials. So in addition to the majestic eagle wings pictured below there are also quite a few new and unusual images such as a clipper ship, liberty crest, various shields, lion, sun god, Indian head, tiger face, sphinx, and many others. Some of these will come with a black NiteIze clip but I'm running low on them so others will have a stainless NiteIze clip.

The stamped Brass Bedbugs will run $50 plus shipping. The batch is sizable but not huge therefore I'll make it one per customer so that lots of folks have a chance at them. Dace SUSale!

Hi Folks!

Can you believe it? It's true...I FINALLY got around to finishing a few of these little Dace knives. The story behind these is a long one but after seeing them sitting around the shop for a couple of years I decided that they needed to be rescued and sent out into the world.

What happened was this: These were supposed to be a neat little midtechy kind of keychain knife. I had a local company which shall remain nameless cut them for me. I then spent a bunch of time doing the rear grind, name stamp and profiling the edges. Then they were CNC V ground by the same nameless company. Initially everything was looking good but there were some problems with the grinding machine and the grinding wheel and the results were not what I expected at all. The grinds were very poor and the pieces did not tumble out well after heat treat. At that point I didn't feel the knives were saleable and I was looking at a hell of a lot of work to try to fix them. So, absolutely disgusted, I threw them into a box and put them onto the shelf. I seriously considered writing them off and scrapping them but couldn't bear to do it.

So fast forward to last summer, I was looking at them again and I decided to try fixing some of them up. Now, the original wheel used to grind these looks like a giant donut and is about 18 inches in diameter. I can't duplicate the original grind shape exactly because my home equipment is totally different. What I ended up doing was to regrind these all by hand with a handheld die grinder and small wheels. Essentially these are now all hand ground blades as a result. Since this is a very imprecise and difficult to control method of grinding, the final finish is what I would call "rustic". So be prepared for some bumps and waves because the Dace definitely do have imperfections but with the raw bar finish I think they manage to achieve a certain overall harmony that is rather pleasing.

These are tiny knives. The V ground blade is just over 1 inch and the overall length is a hair over 3.5" The material is .166 thick S30v steel with a heavy raw bar finish. The vacuum heat treat, cryo and tempering to 59-60 Rockwell was done at S&W so they are perfect. They pop bottle caps like a champ and the pry tip on the butt end works very well. For safety, please keep the knife in the sheath when using the tool functions! And speaking of sheaths, the final piece of the puzzle is the great kydex work which was done by Kip from the Toolbook community. A big thank you to Kip for the nice job on these!

This is the first wave of Dace Knives. While I do have more I'm really not sure just how many I will ultimately finish. Some of them may not be worth saving and others didn't make this cut and will have to be refinished yet again. I have no idea if or when I will have time to finish more so please don't pester me about it, I'm just happy to finally get a few of them good enough to offer this one time. In the future I may make more midtech type knives but I certainly will go about it differently and hopefully avoid the pitfalls that I met with this batch. ;)

So, this SUSale is for 60 Dace Knives. They are going to run $190 each plus shipping. I will let US customers choose between insured Priority Mail for $10 or Express Mail for $15 but International customers will have to use Express Mail International for $35. Obviously these are one per customer and any duplicate entries will be discarded. This is a very large SUSale so it's going to take a bunch of work for me to get the results up tonight and to send out emails. For this reason I think maybe 6 PM Eastern time is a good time to end it as I will be working for hours afterwards dealing with it all.

Hi Everyone,

Just want to say up front that I really appreciate all the interest and support this year, you all have been unbelievably kind and generous. I'm extremely fortunate to have so many fine people collecting, using and enjoying my crazy little creations. Thank you so VERY much!

Today I have some titanium BedBugs finished. These are very light and handy little guys. They have a plain stonewashed finish and come with #1 Phillips bit, two sets of #204 O-rings and a stainless #.5 S Biner from NiteIze. I may not bother to make any anodized titanium captive bit tools partly because fresh O-rings tend to leave a little bit of oily residue on the metal which dulls the colors slightly and is tough to clean. Anyway, they're great just the way they are so I'm not going to worry about it.

Titanium BedBugs run $45 plus shipping and once again it will be a limit of two on them. Probably it's too late to get anything there before Christmas given the tremendous volume of packages and the delays that are already underway with the post office. Regardless, I hope everyone has a wonderful and relaxing Christmas and all the best for 2013!

Howdy Folks,

Well I'm working my tail off trying to get a few more sales in this year. I've had some unfortunate delays and setbacks this holiday season so am not getting quite as much done as I had wished but that's OK...just means there will be more items available for January. :)

Anyway, today I have some more of the Count Sporkula tools done. These are the 301 stainless steel ones. There are a couple of stonewashed pieces but most of them have a light glass bead finish on them. These are great wallet tools and would be perfect little stocking stuff type items. They run $45 each plus shipping. I'm going to limit to two per customer as the batch is sizable but not huge and I did carefully check the sales page this time to make sure the limit is set to two. My apologies for all the confusion earlier this week!

Bronze BedBugs

Good Morning Folks!

It's a cold, rainy and dreary day here but at least it's not snowing. Great day to hunker down with a hot drink and do a sale.

This is a new item that I've been planning for a few months. The BedBugs are a simple bit caddy tool and a good excuse for me to get to play with a variety of materials. Because of the simple design I can use some metals which are a little softer than usual since there is no pry function or cap lifter to get chewed up. So the first wave of these are in warm and lovely bronze, alloy 510 which is a spring tempered bronze. These are already beautiful but will develop a great patina over time. I encourage you to handle these frequently, get them wet, spill stuff on them, rub dirt into them and ding them up because they will just get better and better looking as time goes on. I can't wait to see what they look like in a year or two.

Other BedBugs will be coming over the next weeks and months as well and some of the other materials will include titanium, naval brass and 316 stainless steel so there will be some interesting variations coming. BTW, some of the Atwood Scholars may note that I made a couple of little sample tools last year which I called BedBugs but I decided not to go forward with that design...I didn't want to waste a great name so I thought it would be a perfect fit with this little tool. ;)

I'm on a campaign to save my fingers this winter so I decided that instead of putting all these together I would let you all have some of the fun...hehe. So these will ship with a little bag containing two sets of rubber O-rings, a #1 Philips bit and a small NiteIze S clip and you guys can put them together yourselves. I love these little clips btw and you'll be seeing them again as I have some other tools I want to use them with up the road. Definitely handier than a lanyard for certain things.

Plain Titanium G5 Prybabies

Hi Folks,

Well, it would seem that the holiday season is upon us once again. I thought it was just here about 5 minutes ago but the time sure is flying. It doesn't quite feel like December here either because we still don't have any snow but that's fine by me. It will be here soon enough...

Things are cooking along at a reasonable pace despite a few recent setbacks. I'm grinding some new Mystery steel tools this week and hope to get them further along over the weekend. If all goes well those tools will be going to heat treat early next week so should be back the week before Christmas. A second new tool design, which does NOT require heat treat, is being cut today and Monday and those will be coming perhaps as early as next weekend. So there is lots of cool new stuff on the way shortly!

Today I have more titanium Prybabies done. I decided to leave these with a plain stonewashed finish and so none are anodized. No stamps or grind variations either, just plain Janes because there's a lot of people who like vanilla. I should know, I'm one of them! :D There will be stamped Prybabies, more anodized Prybabies and probably eventually even some patterned ones coming but it won't be until next year.

For the newbies just a reminder, the ti G5 Prybabies feature a pry tip/wire stripper notch, bottle opener that doubles as a 5/16" wrench and a set of SAE wrenches ranging from 1/4-9/16", all in a compact package that is just over 3 inches long and is 5/32 (.160") thick.

The plain ti G5 Prybabies run $65 each plus shipping and I'll make this sale a limit of two per customer please. SUSale: SlotShots

Hi Everyone,

Well, the OD whistle SUSale was such a success yesterday that I thought we might as well keep the ball rolling with another sale...this time I have dug deep in the Atwood Archives to bring you another blast from the past!

Today I have twelve 303 stainless steel SlotShot cups. These are the old school diamond knurled BigShots with three milled slots that will accept the small tritium tube markers, users to obtain and install the tubes themselves, if so desired. These are gorgeous cups and I can't believe I had these hiding in a box down in the shop, totally forgotten about. They even have the little dice with each cup.

So, the 12 SlotShots will run $75 each plus shipping. International customers will have to pay $35 for Express mail due to the weight, I don't want any problems with customs and tracking issues and you know these are going to be checked out since they weigh so much (1/2 lb each).

OD Green Aluminum Whistles SUSale

Hope your Thanksgiving was a good one! I ate too much as usual and then watched some GREAT football games so it was a pleasant and relaxing day for me.

Ok, so it's been a long time since I've done a Sign Up Sale. I have several regular projects underway but due to unforeseen delays they are taking forever to get finished...so in the meantime I thought perhaps a little SUSale action would be just the thing to break the monotony.

For those folks who are more recent fans and have not encountered the SUSale system before please familiarize yourself with the rules and also, remember that it's ONE ENTRY PER CUSTOMER please. We carefully go over the list and any duplicate entries will be deleted at the end before the random numbers are selected so don't be "gaming" the system here!

Today I have something really special and very old school. These were leftover from a run of whistles that were made about 6 or 7 years ago, back from the very first run of whistles. At that time I wanted to use mostly just stainless or brass to make whistles. However, the guys at Amherst Machine stuck a bar of aluminum in the machine and turned a dozen plain aluminum bodies as a test to prove out the design before running the rest of them. I sold a couple of these plain unanodized aluminum oddballs over the years but hung on to the rest. Earlier this year when I sent out the 5 rib Longslides for anodizing I decided to throw in these whistles as well and finally get them finished up.

So, there are a total of 9 Olive Drab Green Aluminum Rifle Knurled Whistles available. Eight of these are on Dungeon Finish matte bead chain. There is one more that has the lanyard hole drilled at a funny angle and that one is on a keyring, so it's a true one of a kind setup piece.

The whistles will run $50 each plus shipping and the sign up period will end tonight, Friday 23rd at 8PM Eastern time so get your entry in before then. The winning numbers will be announced shortly after 8PM and at that time I will send emails and purchase links to the winners.

Hey Folks, people keep emailing me and asking how I'm doing after the storm. I appreciate the concern! The answer is, that we only lost power for two hours.... so we got very lucky and the storm missed us for the most part. No damage here whatsoever. I do feel pretty bad for the folks in the low lying areas of NY and NJ. My best wishes to them and I have made a small contribution to relief efforts. Hope they get things straightened out soon!

On another note, I'm working on some new drawings and designs this week. Also preparing for some batches and lining up materials and cutting schedules. It's going to take a little bit for me to get the next batches of items together but I think you all will really like what is around the corner! :D
