Time to Tie One On!

Hi Folks!

I hope everyone is having a terrific Independence Day holiday weekend. It's in the 90's F. here with high humidity so definitely the dog days of summer...

As mentioned previously, I've been very busy lately with new drawings and getting new projects underway. Today I have the first wave of one of those projects ready to go...

I designed this new tool with two groups in mind: the paracord/knot tying crowd and traditional sailors. The DreadKnot is an ultra compact 3 inch pocket tool that features a universal shackle key for loosening those thumb screws found on the U shaped shackles on sailboats. lt works very well for working standard wing nuts too. Also featured is a small marlin spike which I have intentionally left just a little bit blunt but still quite pointy. Fantastic for loosening tight knots in either paracord or ropes! And of course it has a cap lifter and a 1/4" hex opening.

Because I envisioned this tool going to sea, corrosion resistance is an important consideration in the choice of materials. I chose 5/32" thick 316 stainless steel for the first batch as it is excellent in salt water environments. The second batch will be coming in a week or two and they will be in titanium.

The DreadKnots will run $55 plus shipping and it will be one per customer on them for this small first wave. I will be making a bunch of these as time goes on so expect a few releases and possibly a 4 inch version as well up the road.

Thanks for stopping by today and stay cool folks!

All Gone for now, thank you folks! :)

Holy mackerel. Gorgeous. Gone in 7 minutes? Booo to all you bot-operators and insane e-Baying resellers. Leave some for the humans who just want to buy a great tool!

Holy mackerel! Full-on gorgeous! Makes me want to buy another water-logged, 20-year-old, creaky, leaky Hobie and sail again.

And Booooo to all you script-surfers, buy-bots and Ebaying middlemen who are just here to grab and profit. you're keeping tools out of the hands of average humans who just want to buy something marvelous and use it every day. Booo, I say, BOOOOOOO!!!

Unbelievable! I have been refreshing the site every 5 minutes or less and I still missed this! Contemplating Hari Kari or just turning off my computer.

Great new design Peter. Really neat how you incorporated the functions into a cool design. Man I feel fortunate to have checked at just the right time and score one. Thank you Peter.

@Mack Reed: I agree, they make their extra money and I as an active sailor have nearly no chance to hold such a cool tool in my hands. :-(

Just because someone happens to catch a sale does NOT mean they're using "buy-bots" (wtf that is) and it does NOT mean they're selling them on eBay, so save your whining for things that actually SHOULD be whined about. Geez.

No bot wrangler here. I just had a feeling and thought to check in, and somehow took a look during the tiny six minute window! And don't bother looking on eBay, I'll be keeping and USING this little tool.

Cheers and good luck in the next go round.

Thanks Peter! Great tool that I will find very useful.

What's the over-under on the 1st one of these appearing on eBay?

On the other hand (@ Mack Reed), given that Peter said there's a bunch more in the works, I'm hoping for at least a couple SUS's or Flash Sales, which at least give the rest of us non-flippers a better shot at one of these

And almost forgot to say - nice work Peter! Very cool design, high form + function factor!!!

Love the new tool--could've easily named it "Whalebone", but no issue with "Dreadknot"...

Just keep on Trying Guys. :-) they will come to you.

Really liking the Dreadknot! Missed this one, but look forward to scoring one down the road. I am trying to learn some patience with the sales as I have missed a few lately, however they do come in good time ;). Thanks for the work, Peter! The F5 button will be my new best friend for the next few weeks!

Great tool, just need to figure out who at MBARI I'll be gifting this one to.

Hey Peter, the DreadKnot looks like a fantastic user!

Congrats to everyone who got one this time around, I can't wait to take a shot at one in Ti.

Just thought I'd mention that I never, ever use a bottle opener, and would appreciate the occasional design which re-assigned it's space and workmanship to some other task.

Out of curiousity I did once try out the opener and found it very awkward and even painful to use, being so short and narrow-handled.

Thanks for listening to this customer,
CXC

@Island Man, what a great idea, a HARA-KIRI TOOL! Maybe such a design wouldn't be quite so popular.

[just kidding]

I scored oneof these and am happy when I score an item I willbe using. The lanyard function is fantastic thanks Peter.

Chris said...

Already three posted on eBay - two are BINs for $120 & $155 (the third has a current bid of $83). It would be interesting to see what percentage of these that were sold last week end up on eBay...

Taz Dev NYs said...

3 sold for between 75.00 and 125 yesterday. Atwoods are always good to go.

Taz Dev NYs said...

This is a great tool just got mine and its perfect when making lanyards thanks Peter.

aircraft_mech said...

That is the problem, is all these jack-a's buying the stuff to turn around & make a profit instead of letting the people that really want to use the stuff buy it. What a pitty!!!

Kemtitec said...

Now the question arises: should I sell an Atwood tool on Ebay so that I have the money to buy a different Atwood tool on Ebay? Or am I contributing to the problem?

kawasemi said...

Latest on Ebay $175 BIN...the definition of GREED!!!

promark420 said...

Is this one of the "super secret mystery tools" you mentioned earlier this year?

Peter Atwood said...

Nope, SSMTool is still in the works. ;)

Seriously, I've been trying to get one atwood tool for at least a year! I refuse to buy from eBay. I would like to see a first time buyers pre-order that requires a ship to address to reduce re-salers and increase the number of customers who will carry the tool for a lifetime!
