No XL G3s

People keep emailing me and asking if I will do some XL G3 Prybabies in the next batch. No, I can't. The reason is, if I have grooves or thumb scallops on the top edge of the tool then on a lot of the pieces a little teeny stress crack occurs when I make the bend. It's very small. While I don't think it really affects the strength of the tool it looks as though it is a small crack and therefore casts doubt in my mind. In the past I did make a few and then had to spend a considerable amount of time grinding and sanding to fix the areas in question.

What I can do at some point is to make a batch of Prybabies with no grooves or scallops and no little jog at the bottle opener area. That way with an uninterrupted expanse the bend would go smoothly with no problems.

Hmm. Interesting idea on the Prybabies with no grooves. I would be interested in seeing something like that.

Thanks, Peter, for the explanation. Just curious, though, would it be possible to bend first and then grind the scallops later? I'm not dying for an XL G3, but I am curious

Well, we're talking old school plain basic Prybaby. That's all...

Yeah it is possible and that's actually what I used to do. To be honest it's a pain in the ass though. Basically my entire method of production has changed on these and that's why we are not seeing XLs anymore.

I'm very new to the Atwood world and still trying to get all these names straight, G3, Fixer, Prybabies. Whatever you call them, I think they are the coolest things and just snagged my first the other day, a Superbug, which is in route.

I would look forward to you making some new G3s.

Like many people, I don't have one yet so I want to encourage you to make whatever you feel is best for you!

Thanks for being kind and asking for our input.

When is the fixer on the way?

Peter Atwood said...

Fixers are waiting for sheaths and sharpening. I have quite a lot of them coming but it will be a few weeks probably.

I think both pieces sound great. A flat pry tip and bent one both have thier advantages. I'll take one of each!

Cool about the Fixers, can't wait to see the finished product.

Peter, sorry to ask. Do you have an idea of what the fixers will run around?

Thanks

I'm not sure yet Stu. I think probably $150 but I don't know yet...

I would certainly want a prybaby XL G3 as you described it!
Thanks for keeping us informed. The other think I would like is a constellation prybaby XL or mini-keyton. The Damascus ones also look great. Any more in Damascus soon?
Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the info on the XL process. I'm clueless when it comes to how you make these things. Luckily for me, a friend sent me an older XL PryBaby that is super cool. I'd like to see another tool in the future with the XL bend if you get time. Thanks!

Thanks Peter... How about a teaser pic of the fixer?

Yes, I would like to see a visual on this tool called the Fixer.
Need to allocate funds for said tool/tools,which has become an addiction since i found Mr.Atwood's
web site.
