Glimpse in the Notebook

Couple of rough sketches and trying out various names...This is close to what the RingCutter will look like. The other drawing is of a possible future double ended wrench tool that I am calling the FunnyBone. Metric on one end and SAE on the other. :)

I'm always tweaking, doodling and coming up with these while I'm reading or watching movies and during commercials when the football games are on.

Thanks! Yeah, it's really neat, 17 tools in one. :) I'm calling it the FunnyBone though... :p Might have a steel sample very soon if all goes right...

Wow Peter, this would be the ultimate tool for me to have in my "assitant's bag" when I'm out assisting on photo / film shoots. I always love being the one with the tools that help.

I'm guessing it would thicken up the end too much to put a slight pry tip on one of the ends? Most likely would kill the clearance needed to use it as a wrench. Just thinking of how to pack more ability in, as if it doesn't already have enough.

I'm sold.

Great stuff Peter, thanks for the insight into your creative process, and thanks for the teasers!

Wow, very cool to see some of your sketches. It definitely looks like you have a lot of cool projects coming down the pipeline. Great stuff and neat pictures. Thanks for sharing.

Oh man, I want both of these! I'm gonna have to get a 2nd job to satisfy my Atwood cravings.

That is so interesting! Thank you very much for posting those! :-)

Peter, dogbone looks GREAT. Is your plan for those ringers with blades to have small kydex sheaths for "neck-knife" -type carry?

That ring cutter looks very cool. To me, it also looks a bit like a kerambit ...

Looks like the bone is going to put the old crawdaddy to rest...

Peter:

Please make the "Dogbone" tool.

It's the FUNNYBONE dammit! :D Hehe, I should have written it on the page....

Wow! Those two tools look amazing.

Do you think that you'll make as many ring cutters as you have shark teeth?

I'm torn between doing all I can to score a shark tooth or holding onto my limited funds to try for the ringed cutter.

Just beautiful!

Wow Peter! Both tools look like winners! Great work!

I like the "funnybone" I work on
both equipment that is both SAE and metric. Would be an awesome one to get made. I like my Crawdaddy. But the FunnyBone would be doubley useful.

TOUCHE'!

Okay, please, please make the "Funnybone" tool.

Luv the 'funnybone' : )

I was hoping for a metric Crawdaddy at some point, but the 'bone might just do the trick!

(by the way, still rOcking my Bike Tool everyday!!! - its nice and broken in now from many a-beer bottle and occasional motorcycle & bike tinkering)

Wow...both are super impressive!! Peter, I am really amazed by your creativity. What makes your creativity even more fantastic is your unique touch of functionality and versatility. The Ring cutter looks really mean and cool. The FunnyBone is just a big blast of function and imagination. These are just as cool/functional as a tool can be. Great Job!

that funnybone is a pretty cool design. I really like the concept of having metric on one side and sae on the other. Not even leathermen can do 17 tools in one :). Ringcutter is neat too but I might be partial to the size of the sharktooth, better for edc.
Thanks for the sneak peek!

ringcutter or sharktooth...I am in love with both! beautiful, functional pieces that'll get used!

I wish there was a lottery for part of the run on each; would allow some of us who are away from the keyboard a chance- but I'm not complaining! I'll keep my fingers crossed, say my prayers at night and just hope!

I like the Ring Cutter, but what about making it with a wrench opening like the Funnybone. That would give you the basic functions all in one tool: blade, screwdriver, and wrench.

Thanks for the sketches. For all of us living vicariously through your work it's a nice addition to the roster of things to enjoy! BTW I'd buy both.

The Funny Bone might very well become my first Atwood tool; now I just have to camp outside your house in the hopes of getting one!

Just a random thought here: have you ever considered making the ring on the Ring Cutter a standard SAE/metric size? I know you cram as much as you can into a single item (adding anything more would probably involve grease and a running start), but it just seems like the ring could have some use outside of finger twirling.

peter im a little stumped how do you make your inside cutouts like on the gasbabys and some of your other tools. do u use a bandsaw with a bladewelder, or drill then file them to shape,

Peter Atwood said...

Laser and/or waterjet. There's no other way to make such precise shapes in any kind of way that is economical and even these are becoming rather expensive options. Costs are rising for everything right now unfortunately.

wow..whatever the name is, i like it! BTW, Peter, any eater release plan ? :D

Hey Peter!

Why not make room in your "Dogbone" for a double end bit (phillips and slotted). Goes with the bi-polar nature of the tool...

Peter Atwood said...

Actually I'm more excited about the shorter version that lacks the captive bit entirely. This version would have just the two wrench ends and the bottle opener. Less leverage but more compact and just right for a keychain... ;)

I would be also.

Picture this: (music from Twilight Zone) a guy with a Peter Atwood neck knife, maybe a skeeter, a key ring with a gas baby and a nibble, a sharkbite and crawdaddy in his watch pocket, a bike tool on his belt and twirling one of the triangles. He walks along the sidewalk and realizes he needs to, you know. So he starts into the building and runs smack dab into a metal detector/x-ray device- it is a court-house say. The comedy continues as the x-ray picture hits the eyes of the security guard- "Oh, my. What have we here? Some kind of alien or threat to national security? What IS all this stuff!"

Hey, Peter. Have you considered working with an agency, say the forest service, and designing a tool for those great kids who risk everything every year to protect all us nitwits from forest fires? :)

Unknown said...

I also would love a shorter bone version, w/o the bit and the O-rings.
That would be complimentary with my Sharkbite or Nibble (althought there would be a duplicate bottle-opener) so I'd have most EDC functions covered with just two tools each stripped down to a minimum size.

just my two cents,
Francesco

So, does the Atwood Bunny have anything for us good boys and girls this Easter? :D

Peter Atwood said...

Hehe, taking a few days off...but no worries, the wheels are turning and I'm gearing up for more. :-)

s4biturbo said...

enjoy your time off and i hope the easter bunny was good to you!

Sign me up for the "Funnybone"! I always missed the chance to buy a Crawdaddy, but this is even better (lucky me ...).
That design would be a perfect fit to work on mixed SAE/metric equipment.
Hope that tool will make it to the production stage.

I'd love to see an oxygen wrench cutout on the funnybone rotationally positioned in the same space as the bottle opener when turned 180 degrees
