Wow!

OK, that was mighty quick, in fact it was a record. I had just under two dozen Nibbles ready, posted them and they were gone in less than 10 minutes. I swear you guys are going to eat me alive if I'm not careful .... :D Sheesh!

I ran out of Phillips bits this morning and have more ordered for tomorrow. So I was not able to finish the BugBites but will work on them once I get all these packages out. Thanks folks! I certainly do appreciate it. :)

Congratulations on yet another sellout success! However, as a long-time fan and hopeful future owner, I'd love to know how I am supposed to deal with the speed at which folks are snapping up your inventory? 10 mins is awfully fast, would that suggest that folks are still using robots to check your site or are they just really lucky? I missed out because I was heating up my lunch - damn :-p

Wow. I was checking the site pretty consistently today and missed it completely. Thats pretty crazy. I wonder about the robots as well...

I really do not know what to tell you or what to think. Since there were a mix of familiar names with some folks who I have never heard of before I have to believe that it is the luck of the draw. I am working on getting some larger batches done of the next releases but I can only make so much stuff...

I appreciate your response. I don't think you're doing anything wrong, you're a victim of your own success - if that is a bad thing? Keep on doing what you are doing, sooner or later I'll get my timing right and be able to snap up one of your beauties. Even if I don't, I very much enjoy seeing someone having fun, being successful, and doing what they truly love to do - all the best.

Matt if it didnt say sold out, Peter did not make them available yet.. you should have waited a few minutes on the new tool to say IN STOCK.

For everyone who is wondering about speed. Another way to get the news quickly without hammering the blog is to use an RSS reader, like bloglines.com .

I have a bunch of feeds on my RSS system - Dilbert, news, Cool Tools, and other blogs. Many of the feed readers will automatically update so if you just leave the window open you will find out about a new post pretty frequently.

Lots of webpages have RSS feeds, and if you haven't tried it yet, it might really change the way you use the web.

@ rkt88edmo: Thanks, yes I know about RSS and use Google Reader for dozens of feeds including this one, but the .php web page that Peter posts his available inventory on does not have an RSS feed - so it's not going to help. I got the RSS feed telling me his was sold out almost instantly via Google though! Just have to keep checking in when I can. Congrats to those of you who got those elusive little buggers! Hmm, wonder how many will be for sale on Ebay...

Thanks Peter!I can tell you that I checked a few time this morning. When I came back from lunch I checked again and the picture of the nibbles was missing. I refreshed my screen and they were available. I was lucky enough to get one, right place/right time I guess. I'm looking forward to the bugbites, oh well. Till next time.

Hi Peter,

I am a big fan of your work and own several of your fine tools. Unfortunately I am one of the unfortunate ones who actually have 9-5 jobs that do not allow me to check your site every 5 minutes for new releases. My frustration is almost equal to the way you feel about those who scoop up your tools only to profit from them on Ebay. Personally I have all but given up trying to get my hands on a few certain items. I know you don't like to hear all the ways us collectors think you should run your business, but when demand is so high, and production is so low, it would make sense to me to do like many other custom knife makers do and let customers order tools...and wait for the maker to get to each order...wether it takes 10 days or 10 months, at least the customer will eventually get the tool they want!!

Peter Atwood said...

Scott, I hear you on that but I am not going to able to deal with 1000 emails per month. Lists are totally unworkable.

Peter, congratulations on the success of your recent sale. As one of your ardent fans, I'd like to humbly request that maybe you should limit all of your tools to just one per order as to be able to distribute the wealth a bit more and limit the chances that someone is hording the tools and possibly reselling on eBay. I missed the Nibbles today but hope for better luck next time. All the best.

Anonymous said...

I agree wholeheartedly with Ray. Doing that will allow the rest of us to have a chance at one of your tools. It's not that hard...they can make a choice and pick which one they would rather have for now, then try to get the other one later.

I also bet a lot of these show up on ebay. Judging by the rancor against Peter on the other thread (and I completely support Peter putting a stop to this)...I bet many of the unfamiliar names that just bought these will resell them there out of spite. Just may not be so easy to tell who they are. You can make your location say anything you want to in ebay. It doesn't have to match your registered address at all.

Way to go, Peter...I will hold out until I can catch one of your tools when they're posted. I'm perfectly ok with that. For every person that says you should just jack the price up high so it's easier for themselves to buy what they want, there are probably at least 20 others of us thanking you for doing it the way you're doing now.

And now I'm really grateful my employers let me web browse on the job. I've been dreaming about the Nibble.

Joe said...

Peter, Man it feels like I won the lottery. I was one of the lucky ones who was able to get my hands on one of those nibbles. My first tool, finally! It has taken me almost 8 months to finally get one of your tools. Right place, right time. I am a big fan of your work and can't wait to see your future tools. I do agree with ray and limiting most of your tools to one per person. Thanks, and congrats on your quick sale.

I understand Peter...say...have you thought of serial numbering your items? That sure would make it easy to tell who the "scalpers" are....

DB said...

Congrats on another record sellout! I've honestly never seen any product garner so much attention that it disappears almost instantly the way your tools do.

Peter, another suggestion, based on the frustrations of others who work the 9-5 jobs (including myself who just went back to the 9-5 grind); what about releasing a few tools early in the morning, and then releasing a few in the evening? Spreading out the release would give more people the opportunity to at least attempt a chance at your tools. It's not like the tools won't sell. ;) Even knowing you were going to release a few things today, it didn't do me any good knowing that I'd be at work all day, like many others.

I've had some luck getting your tools, but it was only because I was lucky enough to be sitting at home ALL day a few times during a release. Otherwise, I've also missed out on the mid day releases, like so many others, because I can't be near a computer while at work during the day. That's the reason I pretty much missed out on everything you release over the past 10 months prior to December.

Even releasing your tools in one giant batch may extend the availability window to an hour or two, but that still doesn't do the 9-5er's any good. THis is more than just a personal request to suit my own needs. I'd like to see your tools in more people's hands. I'm sure you would too. :D

Peter Atwood said...

Yes, that is exactly what I did last week. I had several sales in the mornings, in the evenings and over the weekend so that I could try to spread it around a little more. The bottom line is that I just cannot produce enough at the moment to satisfy demand. I have some really big batches in the works though and so pretty soon I think there will be something that stays on the site for more than 10 minutes. I just have to buckle down and get the work done. :)

"Exactly! I guess I didn't exactly word my original entry correct, as it sounds like I'm saying you haven't done this, which in fact you just recently did. Some of the various forums that discuss your tools were all in agreement that they were happy to see this new strategy of yours! Some people who follow your stuff may not be on the various forums and aren't aware that you had recently started doing this, so I just wanted to clarify.

And I'm sure with the combination of larger batches and multiple releases, we will see a wider distribution of your tools to your fans.

*thumbs up*

Peter- I too missed out today- On purpose!! I really wanted another nibble but held back. Perhaps someone could set up a list on EDC or something and folks who are getting shut out could get one of us who seems to have more luck pick one up for them. I know I'd be willing to do that for someone- it would likely increase the price by 7 or 8 bucks to cover double shipping but it might work. I work too but just click on the site every now and then and I've been relatively successful. But it is a complement, as you've said, that folks are quite as frustrated by not getting one of your tools.

I am so excited that I am FINALLY going to get my first Atwood tool. Yes, I'm one of the new names, and you can be sure that mine is not going to end up on Ebay! I feel very fortunate to be able to join in on this run of Nibbles, because while I greatly admire Peter's work, at this point I'm not planning on becoming a collector with a bunch of safe-babies -- I"d just like a few of his tools that I think would be the most useful for me, and they're gonna be users. I wouldn't have bought a Sharkbite or a Biketool even if they were available, but would have continued to wait and hope that I'd eventually get lucky with a Nibble and a MSOPThing.

And actually, drowning in paperwork at work today was the only way that I did get lucky! I taught a 3 hour class in the morning, and then kept checking periodically as I'd make a bit more progress in the pile of work. I hadn't checked for 20-30 minutes, and then when I went back to the site, I couldn't believe my eyes when it didn't say "sold out." I went back to the site a few minutes later to have another peek at the photo, and they were already gone. :-O

Btw, I'd never even heard the term "robot" until I started reading this blog. Still don't know how they work, but it's pretty obvious what they do. How are they different from an RSS feed? Peter, I know you don't want robots -- are the RSS things ok?

Thanks, Peter, and congrats on your success!

More Nibbles, please. I missed both runs.

Btw, I'm grateful for this blog. When I first became interested in Peter's tools, I would just check his site, not knowing how intense the demand was. And even just doing that, I would occasionally find a tool for sale, just not one that I was particularly interested in, so I'd pass. Since it seemed like I was always missing my favorites, I began reading this blog (I almost never read blogs, usually hate it) and learned how fast I'd have to act if/when I did see a tool I wanted. Which helped me focus, and start my Atwood Savings Plan, so that I'd have some extra cash ready immediately.

All that's to say, it's totally possible to score one of Peter's tools on the up and up. But luck is a huge factor. And that kinda makes it even more fun.

I think I have to be really really lucky! Every tool that I've purchased here, I believe happens to be be the last one! The Mantis I purchased was the last one, the Bike tool was the last one, and the Nibble I just picked happened to be the last one. or does the website automatically indicate "out of stock" for one per customer? (I check every item to see it there's anymore availible for others)
Today I just happened to sit down on a lunch break and checked the web site out and there it said Nibble "In Stock"!!!
Keep up the good work Mr Atwood! I still want a Bermuda Triangle tho...

wow thats impressive. That's a sign of straight up success. Congrats. Any luck of seeing these in again? I missed the two runs...damn education getting in the way.

So I was doing my daily check up on the Available tools section when I realized the site was down. So I quickly checked the blog to see if any goodies were to be posted today. Low and behold 2 delicious Atwood items were going to be available in small batches!!! So I quickly went back to the site. Still down.

Then I did the stupidest thing ever. I went outside to have a quick smoke before I purchased my Atwood goodies.

And when I got back in a few minutes:

"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!"

All gone...

That had to have been a fast sale on the Tropical Bites, wow. I am more of a plain bead blast type but there must be some tropical fans who are very fast on the keyboard.

Did those BugBites just sell out within minutes? I'm gonna have to step up my game! Maybe hire a robot? J/k.

According to EDCF, it was just over two minutes. If only I hadn't spent the extra minute in the shower this morning...

Hey guys, RELAX! I have a lot more coming. A few more today as soon as I get these orders straightened out. I had about 7 people who were in such a hurry that they ordered multiples when I had specified one per customer please. So I had to send a bunch of refunds and then do a bunch of emails to straighten it all out.

I have dozens more of these coming next week when the tumblers get back up and running (down now with bad bearings) and so I can't retrieve the remaining pieces of this batch until then.

I'm about to cut several hundred of these so there are LOTS MORE coming down the road in a month or two.

I got lucky! After a long time, and actually passing on some available tools, Lady Luck delivered the tool for me. I now have my very own "Nibble", and it's not going on any auction site!

Hey, this relaxing thing works. I took a deep breath after missing the last round of tropical bugbites, and happened to check in at the right time this morning. Looks like I scored my first tropical tool, very nice. Thanks Peter!

Darn! I tried again but still no luck, I lost my Prybaby this summer and have been trying to replace it ever since *sigh*, better luck next time I guess.

Ray - I don't think limiting the orders to 1 per customer is a good idea. I like the tools that Peter makes, although my father likes them too.

I've only been lucky enough to snag 1 tool, but I bought two of them. One for me, and one for my father.

Limiting orders? Yes. But not to the extreme of 1 per customer!!

Just my thoughts
