These are super handy little guys. I've been carrying a proto for a few weeks now and I can tell you that I am more than pleased with it's performance. Talk about a great little tool... I was using it to open packages this week, break down boxes in the garage and popped a couple of beers with it too. :) And I'm doing the sheaths so that the bit will be accessible without removing the whole tool from the sheath. Neat little piece.
Still weeks away though from being finished...check out how close to the same I ground all these. Whew! :D

Gah! Peter, you're killing me! First I score a Sharkbite, because it's the perfect keychain tool for me. Then you release the nibble, and I think "it's got everything, plus smaller" so I swap out for it.

Those two O-ring slots cut into the front of the top edge have me intrigued. A new sheath retention system?
ReplyDeleteJust a thumbrest design element but they echo the O ring grooves. They do also give the kydex sheath something additional to hold onto.

Even with punches, presses, grinders and sanders, i would never imagine some of your designs. Congrats on your sucussful business, you deserve it. I wouldn't be surprised if MOMA came knockin, asking for a few pieces for display. When are you gonna collab w/ spyderco or CRKT so I can actually 1. obtain one, 2. use one without fear of damage / loss.

ReplyDeleteI've changed the way I do heat treating and finishing which is why I'm not doing Strider Style tiger stripes anymore. In my old simple oven I would get a black oxide film on my tools which provided a contrast for blasting on the stripes or other patterns. But with the larger batches (too big for my teeny oven) I send stuff out to a local shop for a professional heat treat and it comes back much cleaner and also tumbled. Their oven has a nitrogen atmosphere which minimizes scale formation.
ReplyDeleteSoon I will be sending out to a different company that has a vacuum oven. That will give me a better result yet and even less oxide formation. Results with their cryo quench will be pretty much exactly what you'd get with a Paul Bos heat treat.
That makes a lot of sense. Giving the best heat treat to the edged tool will definitely maximize the performance of the tool. Thanks for sharing the information with us Peter. There is so much behind a tool beside the design of form factor which we are able to observe by eyes.

Peter! Thanks for the all the Ti Gasbabys you had to offer us. It took ALL my will power to only by one since it was the first time I went to the site and saw an available sign... I was checking this site for so long it was almost a shock to see it.. Almost a shock, but because I have been preparing for that moment I don't think you have ever had a paypal transaction that went at the speed of my purchase... Though I may have hesitated on the quantity for a split second, some sort of morality kicked in... I did not want to take a chance for someone else to buy one directly from you. Considering the 3 other atwoods that I managed to get from ebay (all for about $100, seemed to be legit sellers, not profit bastards), I am so happy to be able to get one directly from you.

ReplyDeleteIt's going to take a week or two to get them through heat treat and tumble and then another couple of weeks for sheaths so they are still a ways off...in the meantime I have other things coming and also I'll be starting more batches as well. Gotta keep 'em coming. :D

I was gonna ask that the edges for the o-ring slots not be too sharp for those of us who like to carry them naked(no rings...I love it looks sooo industrial)...but I think possibly the stonewashed finish will gently round off the edges I'm hoping...?
Are there gonna be a few with right hand grinds on these? *wink wink nudge nudge* ^_^
