Wow, 275 entries! I can only see it getting more and more crowded as more and more people learn about the lotteries. This was a pretty special piece though. I just hope that it doesnt' start getting out of hand with hundreds of people vying for every offering.

I'm really interested in new materials and coatings, thus I'm eager on the new DLC stuff. Did you consider testing Titanium nitride* coatings on some of your tools yet? Might be a nice alternative to DLC.

No, not suprising at all. It's just greed. EVERYONE realizes they can trade or flip it for way more than you're charging. That's why the interest. Face it, NO ONE is actually going to USE a talonite MSOP, particularly one that's finished and with a blade. First, the finish will scratch or rub off. Second Talonite, as a material sucks, particularly for a tool. Unless you're going to use it for a diving tool in saltwater, it's incredibly lame. Hardness is poor and resharpening is virtually impossible without a grinder. Anyone who has ACTUALLY tried to sharpen Talonite will attest to the edge literally falling off a blade with stones or ceramic.
ReplyDeleteWell that's just not true buddy. Sorry but I have to disagree completely with your characterization of it as a poor material. And also you are completely wrong that the patterning will come off, it is deeply etched into the metal. And lastly, the material sharpens rather easily if you do it with fine sandpapers as I outline in my mousepad sharpening video. Perhaps you need to hone some new sharpening skills and give it a try before shooting your mouth off.

That piece really was a piece of functional art. I just wish I could afford something like that, which was why I didn't participate in the lottery. Hopefully, though you will soon come up with something in greater numbers and in a price range I can reach. =-]

Great job, Peter - looking forward to seeing more great items roll out and maybe I'll be lucky enough to grab one. You do realize you now have a cult following of sorts, but for good reason. As for Anonymous' comments, that's just sad. i for one would never enter such a lottery if I didn't plan on keeping and USING an Atwood creation, but that's just my 2c. And commenting in such a way without knowledge of what you are saying, well, someone needs to do some research first.

Yeah, you might PLAN on using it-until you get one of his "specials". Then you keep it in your gun vault , take it out to covet it for a short while (or until you hear the wife coming; she never seems to find them as valuable as you do). If you want one for regular use, you better go for a "big run" piece. And could you take the hit on a loss? Its not like you can just order another one! Being a total capitalist, I admit sometimes I do get irritated about his lack of supply, but when you hold his stuff, well, it helps you understand. Its an Atwood thing!
