I'm betting it's HC given the hardness you quoted. Just wanted to know out of curiosity. 420 HC is very similar to the steel Buck uses.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30128634.post-26150095976482653902008-10-09T18:53:00.000-04:002008-10-09T18:53:00.000-04:00Hehe, actually this piece is two years old. I will have several more Sumos in S30v coming this fall though. They are all getting DLC coated.Peter Atwoodhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16246505554623368895noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30128634.post-79159248854559634532008-10-09T18:42:00.000-04:002008-10-09T18:42:00.000-04:00I can not wait for the production pieces to come o...I can not wait for the production pieces to come out. This will be a perfect work tool for me. as a bicycle mechanic we need to cut things quickly and usually one handed this will serve well.Bhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10433021964493915460noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30128634.post-86352948963023252752008-10-09T17:51:00.000-04:002008-10-09T17:51:00.000-04:00The steel is not as fancy as S30v but 420 is a res...The steel is not as fancy as S30v but 420 is a respectable cutlery steel and has better stainless qualities than S30v. It is heat treated to 58 Rockwell so will have decent edge holding. In addition, this blade is ground pretty thin so it's a good slicer and will be easy to sharpen.Peter Atwoodhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16246505554623368895noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30128634.post-12359260515874672952008-10-09T16:09:00.000-04:002008-10-09T16:09:00.000-04:00Hey Peter, very excited to see this in the lottery...Hey Peter,
very excited to see this in the lottery! I'll keep my fingers crossed. Can I ask you about the steel though? I totally understand that this is a prototype, and why you'd use a less expensive steel, but will this 420 blade stand up to daily use? Has it been heat treated to a working blade hardness? I'm sure others would be mortified that I wouldn't keep this in a glass case if I was lucky enough to win it, but my personal philosophy is that tools are there to be used (yes, even the amazing works of art you build. I just want to make sure that this is a user and not just something to keep in the safe. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

-MattMatt Bobrykhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16352128187377642316noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30128634.post-27399295079084227212008-10-09T15:34:00.000-04:002008-10-09T15:34:00.000-04:00Oh my god- that is the most beautiful thing I've s...Oh my god- that is the most beautiful thing I've seen....I must have it....(saying a little prayer to the lottery gods...)Mhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00200699483130376961noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30128634.post-20282415931266999882008-10-09T15:30:00.000-04:002008-10-09T15:30:00.000-04:00OK very cool lighting but a black coat would be pr...OK very cool lighting but a black coat would be pretty sweet.
thanksSnake Man Bonehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08092828387152326229noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30128634.post-4216613181670716212008-10-09T15:19:00.000-04:002008-10-09T15:19:00.000-04:00Jacob - There's no coating on my RingThing; just r...Jacob -

There's no coating on my RingThing; just really dramatic lighting. :)DBhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16458080007931966065noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30128634.post-83113814047836209652008-10-09T14:57:00.000-04:002008-10-09T14:57:00.000-04:00Almost wet myself when I saw the Pingie notice.
